Well, this will either be the blog you expected to read, or the one that takes you by surprise.
Many of you may have read an email from me recently, but for those who haven't, let me summarize what's been going on down here: For the past 6 weeks I have worked alongside Miguel and Kristen Shaul, their Dominican Rising interns, a few American groups and have felt the call to stay in the Dominican Republic for the next year! This was not an easy decision to make as I did not want to put my teaching career on hold. I also resigned from a job at a school where a good friend of mine works. Yet the call is clear, and I have a year's worth of journal entries recording my prayers to help where needed down here. God simply took me up on my offer.
Some questions you may be asking:
Wait, aren't the Shauls leaving the DR for most of your time down there?
Yes, the Shauls will be living in Omaha, Nebraska from November through May so that Kristen may finish nursing school. Miguel will make routine visits to the DR. This will mean that I'm the the solo Americana down here for their ministry, but I have come to make many Dominican friends and do not rely on the Shauls for my community.
What will you be doing?
Good question. My official title is administrative assistant to the Shauls which encompasses four main areas:
–Tierra Prometida-Staying connected with the pastors of five communities of the Shauls' Promised Land ministry and keeping them connected to their American partner church
–Amanece Dominicano-Discipling the young women of Dominican Rising through intentional relationships as they prepare to be sent as missionaries by May 2014.
-Mogollon and Cerros de Mogollon- Continuing to work with these two communities that I have worked with for the past 3 summers through English classes and more
-Administrative Assistant-Managing the Shauls' ministries' finances and paperwork
How can I be involved?
So glad you asked! Two things; prayer partners and monthly supporters.
1. I need prayer partners. These are people who are committed and whom I can rely on for weekly or daily prayers for my ministry and are available through email for me to send urgent requests. If you would like to partner with me in this way, please send me an email indicating so to [email protected].
2. In order to continue to work and live down here I will need to raise about $1,900 a month. I would love for you to consider partnering with me monthly! Here are some ways you could sponsor me:
-
$20/month pays for my phone cards to keep in touch with the pastors
-
$50/month allows me to pay for a clinic visit for someone who couldn't go otherwise
-
$76/month allows me to continue sponsoring my two children through Compassion International
-
$120/month pays for my groceries
-
$200/month pays for my rent
If you would like to support me in this way or even through a one-time donation, the “Support Me!” button is within the Main Menu options under my picture at the top of this page.
Also, checks can be made out to Adventures in Missions and must have brownshannon in the memo line to be credited to my account. They then can be mailed to:

Thank you for your support thus far and interest in the Dominican Republic! I look forward to seeing how the Lord uses us together!
Be blessed!
